How I Quit My 6-Figure Job and Retired Early Through Real Estate

The real story, no highlight reel.

They say money is everything. But is it really? I was making six figures as an accountant and I was miserable. I remember sitting at my desk one day thinking, is this really it? Is this what the next 30 years of my life are going to look like?

I had done everything right. Got the college degree, got the job, was climbing the corporate ladder. I bought a house I loved. On paper it looked like the American dream. But I felt completely stuck. Unfulfilled. The job was just something that paid the bills, and that reality hit me harder than I expected.

If any of this sounds familiar, this post is for you. Because I went from sitting at that desk feeling absolutely hopeless to being retired, living in Colombia, designing my own days, and working on things I actually love, including making YouTube videos and coaching investors.

Here’s how it actually happened.

I Had It All Backwards

I did not grow up in a family that invested in real estate or even owned a home. I grew up in Colombia, so the whole concept of real estate investing was pretty foreign to me. I did get a job in property management, which taught me the ins and outs of managing properties. But financing, buying, deal analysis? I had zero idea how any of that worked.

So my logic was simple: you need money to invest in real estate. I don’t have money. Therefore I cannot invest in real estate.

“I thought I needed to be wealthy so I could invest in real estate. I realized later that you build wealth through real estate.”

In 2015 I made this big plan of everything I needed to accomplish before I could start investing. I had it completely backwards. But I didn’t know that yet.

Years of Preparation, Zero Action

I started reading books. Listening to podcasts. Watching YouTube. Analyzing deals on paper. I even opened an LLC for the real estate investing business I was going to start.

And then I just kept researching. For years.

I didn’t buy my first property until 2019. So from 2015 to 2019, I was in full preparation mode with no actual movement forward. I was letting the preparation become the excuse.

Then 2018 rolled around and I was about to turn 30. I looked at my life and realized I had negative net worth. I had debt. I was living paycheck to paycheck on a six-figure salary. And what made it worse? I was an accountant. I understood financial statements. I could read a balance sheet. But no one had ever taught me personal finance, not in college, not in accounting school, not anywhere.

“I was making six figures, working as an accountant, and living paycheck to paycheck. The irony was not lost on me.”

The Mindset Shift That Changed Everything

The problem wasn’t just that I thought I wasn’t ready. It was deeper than that. I genuinely believed I wasn’t capable. That this wasn’t for someone like me.

I had a full mental breakdown. I went to therapy. And slowly I started working through all of it. The fears, the limiting beliefs, the years of telling myself I wasn’t enough.

The silver lining was that on the other side of all that, I found a version of myself who actually believed she could do this. And once I believed it, I started moving.

My First Deal Was Unconventional (and a Little Terrifying)

I started searching Zillow. Looking for deals. And I found a duplex I fell in love with. The original plan was simple: partner with my dad, buy one duplex with an FHA loan, small down payment, done.

Then I went to see it and realized there were two more duplexes right next to it on the same street, both also for sale. I had read a book called Buy Real Estate with Little to No Money Down and it had given me a lot of creative ideas. So instead of buying one duplex, I bought all three.

The way I financed them was unconventional and honestly not something I recommend, but I took out personal loans for the down payments on two of the duplexes and my dad used the FHA loan for the third. It was messy and stressful and there were a lot of moving pieces. You can read the full story with all the details in this post about my first deal.

You’re More Ready Than You Think

Looking back at all those years I spent researching without taking action, I know exactly what was happening. Fear was running the show. Not a lack of knowledge. Fear.

And I see this constantly in people who reach out to me. They’ve read the books. They know how to analyze a deal. They understand how loans work. They’re searching for properties. And they’re still waiting to feel ready.

Here’s the truth: you’re never going to feel ready. You’re not going to know everything until you actually do it.

If you can analyze a deal, if you know how to search for properties, if you have a basic understanding of financing, you are more ready than you think. A good investor-friendly realtor can help you with a lot. A lender who works with investors will walk you through exactly what you need. You don’t have to have it all figured out before you start.

I also have a free guide that walks you through the process, including some of the mistakes I made and creative ways to approach the down payment if funds are tight. Grab it below if that would help.

What Happened After I Took That First Leap

I bought those three duplexes in 2019. I quit my corporate job in 2022. My husband followed in 2025. We are now financially independent, work-optional, living in Colombia with our son and our soon-to-be-born baby girl.

It did not take 10 years. It did not require a perfectly laid out 15-year plan. It required one decision to stop waiting and start moving.

“It is possible. But you have to take that first leap.”

It’s not going to be easy. There will probably be a couple of years where you’re working harder than you ever have. But there is light at the end of the tunnel. And once you get there, you realize that there really is more to life than spending it in a job that makes you miserable.
